\nHere are some of the notes I took down from what the kids said during Science. I didn't get lots but it may help and sorry I didn't get it to you earlier.
\n
\nFIRST WEEK
\n
\nQ. What can fly?
\nClass response: Helicopter, dragon, phoenix, birds, griffin, extinct bird\/dinosaur, plane, hot air balloon.
\n
\nQ. (After drawing brainstorm in small groups) What can fly?
\nClass response: broomstick, golden snitch, rocket, kite, bee.
\n
\nTHIRD WEEK
\n
\nQ. Would the umbrella fall faster closed or open?
\nClass response: It would go down faster when closed. When its open it would be slower because theres more air and its curvy.
\n
\nQ. Would the scrunched paper or flat paper fall faster?
\nClass response: The scrunched paper would be faster because it can't catch any air.
\n
\nFOURTH WEEK
\n
\nOn board brainstorming a safe and dangerous parachute in a T chart...
\nSAFE: light chute, chute open
\nDANGEROUS: dropped fast, heavy person, hole in the chute, small chute.
\nChildren discussed they may change the length of the string, put paper on the bottom so the man lands safely, more chutes to catch more air.
\n
\nQ. What would you like to do next week?
\n- how hot air would change the parachute
\n- the things the other children did (whirly birds)
\n- helicopters
\n- paper planes, which goes further
\n- paper flying cars
\n- hot air balloons
\n
\nWEEK FIVE
\n
\nQ. What do Scientists do?
\n- we made parachutes
\n- they record.. we recorded how we made our parachute
\n- we changed it, when it was bad
\n- we asked questions
\n- you experiment
\n- you discover things
\n- we experimented
\n- we observed
\n- we predicted
\n- we infer","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"26347431","dateCreated":"1282712262","smartDate":"Aug 24, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"nikkiduncan","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/nikkiduncan","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/year4science.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/26347431"},"dateDigested":1531982256,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"27 AUGUST","description":"So for this week my understanding is..
\n
\n1. reflection on last week - I liked, I learnt activity (nikki)
\n
\n2. Parachutes
\n- class brainstorm (concept map and possibly begin a KWL?)
\n- 25 mins (approx) 'playing' with materials
\n- 15 mins (approx) 'recording\/drawing' what materials they have used...
\n- dropping\/testing our parachutes
\n
\nNow that I think of it I'll get onto plastacine now!

\nKWL is a good idea too!
\nI think we will prob find we might need a bit more time at making the parachutes so we can allow for that anyway!

\nI will bring along my camera this week too!
\n
\nSorry i havent forgotten to put up the kids responses to things i have been recording I just havent found the time yet but promise to do so soon!

\n
\n1. Nikki... recap on what we did last week & write one or two sentences as a class. Kids to copy these sentences into their science books. Do you think they should draw a picture with them or are the pictures they drew last week sufficient?
\n
\n2. Jarrod. Introduction to air experiments (do we still want to do this or do one of the activities off the deakin site Mel showed us?)
\n
\n3. Marie (I think it was you, I'm not 100% sure!!) introduce scenario and play with materials...

\nIn regards to materials, we need to bring along

\n
\n1. I think thats a great idea to recap, possibly only sentences tomorrow to stick to time limit

\n2. I think the "Air takes up space" first activity looks great! We could do this as a whole class activity to begin! and possibly another?? to get talking about air! I will bring the equipment if you like? Maybe we could get them to mark in where they think air is on the picture like the activity suggests? to again obtain prior knowledge?? il print out a sheet of this if i can get a copy and see what you think?

\n3. The parachute flight activity is great too and thats what we were thinking anyway..

\nThis is the website I was talking about on Friday http:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/arts-ed\/education\/sci-enviro-ed\/early-years\/air.php<\/a> If you click on the pdf at the bottom of the page, it has lots of activities we can do with air and flight. I was reading through a few and I thought it would probably suit what you had in mind for Friday. So if you need some inspiration, check it out. Let me know if I can help, even though I won't be there, I'd be happy to help plan more!

\nSorry if I do this wrong, but it's my first wiki ever. I found a big book to read in order to introduce flying. Its called 'The wombat who wanted to fly', basically the wombat tries attaching feathers because he know birds fly. I thought we could ask the class during the text whether his plan will work and why not. Then at the end, we could discuss how we will be looking at better ways to make things fly and what else flies other than birds etc.
\nIs this ok? Any comments\/concerns?
