some notes from science lessons
Hi guys,
Here are some of the notes I took down from what the kids said during Science. I didn't get lots but it may help and sorry I didn't get it to you earlier.

FIRST WEEK

Q. What can fly?
Class response: Helicopter, dragon, phoenix, birds, griffin, extinct bird/dinosaur, plane, hot air balloon.

Q. (After drawing brainstorm in small groups) What can fly?
Class response: broomstick, golden snitch, rocket, kite, bee.

THIRD WEEK

Q. Would the umbrella fall faster closed or open?
Class response: It would go down faster when closed. When its open it would be slower because theres more air and its curvy.

Q. Would the scrunched paper or flat paper fall faster?
Class response: The scrunched paper would be faster because it can't catch any air.

FOURTH WEEK

On board brainstorming a safe and dangerous parachute in a T chart...
SAFE: light chute, chute open
DANGEROUS: dropped fast, heavy person, hole in the chute, small chute.
Children discussed they may change the length of the string, put paper on the bottom so the man lands safely, more chutes to catch more air.

Q. What would you like to do next week?
- how hot air would change the parachute
- the things the other children did (whirly birds)
- helicopters
- paper planes, which goes further
- paper flying cars
- hot air balloons

WEEK FIVE

Q. What do Scientists do?
- we made parachutes
- they record.. we recorded how we made our parachute
- we changed it, when it was bad
- we asked questions
- you experiment
- you discover things
- we experimented
- we observed
- we predicted
- we infer

sounds all good and well. ill bring plenty of spare materials for parachutes

sounds great! :) i'm happy to remind the kids about the parachute intro we went through last week once nikki has done the reflection and (unless someone else wants to do it that's fine :) do the concept map? We can discuss it tomorrow morning anyway :)

Thats great! I think I'm a bit late, sounds like you're all organised but is there anything I can do to help though?

thanks mel for that link too! the activities last week went great and took up all of our time so parachutes it is this week :)
